At CoderDojo NYC we werere thrilled with President Obama’s remarks during his final State of the Union speech about the importance of computer science in helping students prepare to be successful in life.
His belief that our educational system should be “…offering every student the hands-on computer science and math classes that make them job-ready on day one…” speaks directly to our mission of creating a fun, collaborative environment for kids to explore and get excited about STEM*
Computer technology has become one of the backbones of the modern economy; right now, hundreds of thousands of tech jobs are open across the country, making computer science a needed skill for our current and future workforce.
CoderDojo believes that every child needs to have the opportunity to learn about computer science and technology. According to the U.S. Office of Science and Technology Policy, less than
25% of U.S. K-12 schools teach computer science. To us, this is worrisome, and it’s why we work hard to provide FREE monthly workshops where kids and their parents have the chance to come and explore web, game and app development.
Parents in the NYC area, if you have a child ages 7-17 and are interested in getting your child involved, you can get more information and sign up here on our website.
We’re always looking for volunteers - you don’t have to be a coding or teaching expert. You can check out all our current volunteer opportunities on our website.
